Chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease disproportionately affect minority communities, and the COVID-19 pandemic has affected minority-owned small businesses disproportionately hard.

As part of our commitment to advance health equity, Cigna launched a new initiative to support minority- and women-owned small and mid-size businesses. The goal is to help create safer, healthier and more productive workforces. After all, healthy employees are a key driver of the economic health for these companies.

Mike Triplett, president of Cigna's U.S. Commercial business, points out, “Health is wealth; and for many minority and women-owned businesses, the key to economic prosperity is to ensure they have – and maintain – a healthy and vibrant workforce. Today's intersection of health, economic and racial crises motivated us to take definitive action to partner with these small and mid-size businesses by improving the health and productivity of their workforce – many of whom are from underserved communities.”

In the Mid-Atlantic region, Cigna offers tailored health plans designed to improve health equity and address social determinants of health within the local community. These health plans, which are available for companies with more than 25 employees, include health and lifestyle services for specific health issues – including asthma, heart disease, diabetes, high-risk pregnancies and more – that disproportionately impact people of color.
